Polysporin is a topical combination antibiotic ointment or cream containing bacitracin zinc and polymyxin B sulfate as its primary active ingredients. Some formulations (such as Polysporin Complete) may also include gramicidin and lidocaine. Bacitracin acts mainly against gram-positive bacteria by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through interference with the regeneration of phospholipid carriers involved in peptidoglycan synthesis. Polymyxin B targets gram-negative bacteria by increasing the permeability of the bacterial cell membrane via interaction with membrane phospholipids. The combination provides broad-spectrum antibacterial coverage for minor skin wounds (cuts, scrapes, burns), mild skin infections, and superficial eye infections such as conjunctivitis or blepharitis when used in ophthalmic formulations. It is often recommended for individuals allergic to neomycin[1][2][3][4][5][8].
