Polysporin is a topical combination antibiotic ointment or cream containing bacitracin zinc and polymyxin B sulfate as its primary active ingredients. Some formulations (such as Polysporin Complete) may also include gramicidin and lidocaine. Bacitracin acts mainly against gram-positive bacteria by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through interference with the regeneration of phospholipid carriers involved in peptidoglycan synthesis. Polymyxin B targets gram-negative bacteria by increasing the permeability of the bacterial cell membrane via interaction with membrane phospholipids. The combination provides broad-spectrum antibacterial coverage for minor skin wounds (cuts, scrapes, burns), mild skin infections, and superficial eye infections such as conjunctivitis or blepharitis when used in ophthalmic formulations.
