Polysporin Triple Therapy is a topical combination antibiotic ointment containing three active ingredients: polymyxin B sulfate, bacitracin zinc, and gramicidin. It is used to prevent infection and promote healing in minor cuts, scrapes, burns, and certain skin infections. The mechanism of action involves broad-spectrum antibacterial activity: - Bacitracin zinc inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by interfering with the regeneration of phospholipid receptors involved in peptidoglycan synthesis. - Polymyxin B sulfate increases the permeability of the bacterial cell membrane by interacting with its phospholipid components. - Gramicidin disrupts bacterial cell membranes by forming channels that allow ions to pass through. This combination provides coverage against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. It is intended for external use only on minor wounds or skin infections[1][2][4][7].
