Overview

Polytaurine is a synthetic polymer biomaterial composed of polymerized taurine. It is being developed as a hydrogel-based intraocular tamponade for use in vitreoretinal surgery, such as for the treatment of retinal detachment. Due to its hydrophilicity, biocompatibility, and sulfur-containing structure, polytaurine-based hydrogels can match the viscosity and optical properties required to replace vitreous humor while preserving retinal structure and function.
