Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Polyvinyl alcohol is a synthetic polymer used as an ocular lubricant and tear substitute in ophthalmic formulations. It functions as a demulcent and viscosity-enhancing agent, forming a uniform, protective, and lubricating film over the ocular surface. This action stabilizes the natural tear film, reduces friction between the eyelid and cornea during blinking, and slows tear evaporation. Developed and marketed under the brand name Ruizhu by China Grand Enterprises (specifically through its subsidiary Grand Pharma / Hubei Yuanda Tiantianming Pharmaceutical), it is widely used for the temporary relief of eye fatigue, dryness, and minor ocular irritation.
