Polyvinyl alcohol-coated selenium nanoparticles (PVA-SeNPs) are an experimental nanomedicine formulation consisting of elemental selenium nanoparticles stabilized by a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) coating. Developed for research in neurodegenerative conditions, particularly Alzheimer's disease, these nanoparticles are designed to provide neuroprotection by leveraging the antioxidant properties of selenium while utilizing the PVA coating to enhance stability and biocompatibility. In preclinical rat models of Alzheimer's disease, PVA-SeNPs have been shown to reduce amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaque accumulation, increase the expression of hippocampal brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and mitigate oxidative stress by decreasing malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and increasing total antioxidant capacity (TAC). The formulation is typically administered orally in research settings and has been investigated both as a monotherapy and in combination with mesenchymal stem cell transplantation.
