Overview

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) foam is a sclerosing agent formulation being evaluated for the treatment of venous malformations, particularly those located in the head and neck. In clinical studies, such as those conducted by Shandong University Qilu Hospital, a specific version known as Pol-RRB incorporates hyaluronic acid into the PVA-based foam to potentially improve its stability and therapeutic efficacy compared to conventional sclerosing foams. The mechanism of action involves the physical induction of endothelial damage and localized thrombosis upon injection into the malformed vessels. This process leads to inflammatory-mediated fibrosis and permanent occlusion of the venous channels, resulting in the reduction of the malformation's size and associated clinical symptoms.
