Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) microspheres are permanent embolic agents used in interventional oncology, specifically for transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and other hypervascular tumors. These microspheres are engineered from polyvinyl alcohol, a biocompatible and non-absorbable polymer, to provide mechanical occlusion of the tumor's blood supply. This occlusion induces local ischemia and tumor necrosis while potentially increasing the local concentration of co-administered chemotherapeutic drugs.
