Polyvinylpyrrolidone-tetraphenylporphyrin (PVP-TPP) is an experimental micellar photosensitizer formulation used in photodynamic therapy (PDT). It consists of the hydrophobic photosensitizer 5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP) encapsulated within polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) micelles. PVP serves as a water-soluble, non-toxic polymeric carrier that prevents the aggregation of the porphyrin macrocycle in aqueous environments, thereby preserving its photophysical properties and improving its bioavailability. Upon excitation by visible light, the TPP component acts as a photosensitizer, transferring energy to molecular oxygen to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), specifically singlet oxygen. This localized oxidative stress induces cytotoxic effects, leading to the destruction of targeted malignant cells. In research contexts, PVP-TPP is frequently employed as a reference standard to benchmark the efficacy of novel porphyrin derivatives, such as triazole-substituted porphyrins, in treating cancers like bladder carcinoma.
