Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Polyvisc (also branded as Poly Visc) is an over-the-counter, preservative-free lubricating ophthalmic ointment used for the symptomatic relief of dry eye conditions and eye lubrication. Developed and manufactured by Alcon, its active ingredients are paraffin (30 mg/g) and wool fat (30 mg/g), which together form a smooth, comfortable protective film over the ocular surface to reduce tear evaporation. Because of its high viscosity, it is primarily recommended for overnight use. In clinical research, such as a trial conducted at Westmead Hospital, Polyvisc has been utilized as a non-antimicrobial comparator against chloramphenicol ophthalmic ointment to evaluate infection rates, corneal re-epithelialization, and side effects in patients with recent corneal abrasions.
