Overview
Pomegranate essential oil is a natural, plant-derived investigational product extracted from the pomegranate (*Punica granatum*). It is being developed by the Universidade de Fortaleza in Brazil as a mouth rinse formulation for the prevention of dental plaque (supragingival biofilm) and gingivitis. The oil is believed to possess antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, which help in reducing the accumulation of oral biofilms. In clinical research, it has been evaluated in randomized, double-blind, crossover studies comparing its efficacy against standard oral antiseptics like chlorhexidine and negative controls like distilled water.
