This is an investigational topical herbal treatment consisting of pomegranate (*Punica granatum*) seed and peel extracts formulated as gels for the management of atrophic oral lichen planus. Developed by researchers at Cairo University and the National Research Centre in Cairo, Egypt, the treatment utilizes bioactive phytochemicals—including phenolic acids, tannins, anthocyanins, and flavonoids—to provide anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. It was evaluated in a randomized clinical trial (NCT04193748) involving 42 patients, where it demonstrated significant efficacy in reducing pain and clinical signs of oral lichen planus compared to triamcinolone acetonide. The treatment is a botanical extract modality rather than a synthetic small molecule or biologic.
