Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Pomegranate seed oil is a natural oil extracted from the seeds of the pomegranate fruit (Punica granatum). It contains a unique blend of bioactive compounds, most notably punicic acid (a conjugated linolenic acid), oleic acid, linoleic acid, tocopherol (vitamin E), phytosterols, and various polyphenols and flavonoids. Pomegranate seed oil exhibits potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, anticancer, antimicrobial, and antiaging properties. Mechanisms include inhibition of inflammatory mediators (e.g., COX-2), reduction of oxidative stress (ROS and lipid peroxidation), modulation of enzymes involved in tissue remodeling (such as collagenase, elastase, hyaluronidase, and tyrosinase), and promotion of tissue repair and regeneration. It is primarily used as a dietary supplement, cosmetic, and as an ingredient in topical skin and hair care formulations. Preclinical and pilot clinical studies indicate benefits for skin (reducing inflammation, promoting healing, and antiaging effects), metabolic health, diabetes, cardiovascular health, and possibly cancer prevention[1][2][3][4][5].
