This is a combination therapy consisting of three components: - Pooled human immune globulin (often administered as intravenous immunoglobulin, IVIG, or formulated as eye drops): a biologic product containing pooled IgG antibodies from the plasma of healthy donors. It exerts immunomodulatory effects by blocking Fc receptors and neutralizing pathogenic autoantibodies. - Serum tears (either autologous or allogeneic): eye drops made from blood serum, rich in growth factors, proteins, and immunoglobulins that mimic natural tear composition to promote ocular surface healing and reduce inflammation. - Steroids (corticosteroids): anti-inflammatory agents that suppress local immune responses on the ocular surface. This combination is used primarily for severe ocular surface diseases such as dry eye disease (DED), especially in cases associated with autoimmune conditions like Sjögren’s syndrome. The rationale for combining these therapies is to provide both immediate anti-inflammatory action (steroids), long-term immunomodulation (IVIG/immune globulin), and support for epithelial healing and tear film stability (serum tears). Each component has distinct but complementary mechanisms of action[1][3][5].
