Populus fremontii pollen is a non-standardized allergenic extract derived from the pollen of the Fremont Cottonwood tree (Populus fremontii). It is classified as a biologic and is used for both the diagnosis and treatment of immediate hypersensitivity allergic reactions. For diagnosis, the extract is administered via percutaneous or intradermal skin tests to elicit a localized IgE-mediated response in sensitized individuals. For treatment, it is used in allergen immunotherapy (allergy shots), administered subcutaneously in gradually increasing doses. This process aims to induce immune tolerance, shifting the body's response from a pro-allergic Th2 profile to a more tolerant Th1/Treg profile, thereby reducing or eliminating allergic symptoms upon natural exposure to the pollen. The product is developed and manufactured by companies such as Greer Laboratories and Allermed Laboratories and is available in multi-dose vials, sometimes as a component of regional tree pollen mixes.
