Overview

Populus nigra pollen is an allergenic extract derived from the pollen of the black poplar (also known as Lombardy poplar). It is used primarily as a diagnostic tool for skin testing to identify immediate hypersensitivity (Type I) allergies and as a therapeutic agent in allergen immunotherapy (desensitization). By exposing the patient's immune system to controlled, increasing doses of the allergen, it aims to induce immunological tolerance and reduce symptoms associated with allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, or asthma triggered by poplar pollen. It was first approved by the FDA in 1965 and is produced as a non-standardized solution for intradermal, percutaneous, or subcutaneous administration.
