Overview

Populus tremuloides pollen, also known as aspen pollen extract, is a biologic allergenic extract derived from the pollen of the quaking aspen tree (Populus tremuloides). It is developed and manufactured by Greer Laboratories, Inc. and is indicated for both the diagnosis of and immunotherapy for allergic conditions such as allergic rhinitis caused by sensitivity to aspen pollen. For diagnosis, it is administered via percutaneous or intradermal routes to elicit a localized allergic reaction (wheal and flare) in sensitized individuals. As a therapeutic, it is administered subcutaneously in gradually increasing doses. This process, known as immunotherapy, works by desensitizing the patient's immune system to the pollen allergens, thereby reducing the severity of allergic symptoms upon natural exposure.
