Poractant alfa is a pulmonary surfactant derived from porcine lung extract, composed primarily of phospholipids (mainly phosphatidylcholine and dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine) and hydrophobic surfactant-associated proteins SP-B and SP-C. It is used for the treatment of Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS) in premature infants with endogenous surfactant deficiency. Poractant alfa acts by reducing surface tension at the air-liquid interface within the alveoli, thereby stabilizing them against collapse during breathing, improving lung compliance, and enhancing respiratory gas exchange.
