Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Porcine bile (also known as pig bile or Pulvis Fellis Suis) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) documented in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia. It is a dried product derived from pig gallbladder bile, primarily composed of bile acids (such as hyodeoxycholic acid, hyocholic acid, and chenodeoxycholic acid), lipids, and pigments. Porcine bile has been traditionally used to clear heat, moisten dryness, relieve cough, and detoxify. Modern pharmacological research has demonstrated its therapeutic potential in metabolic and inflammatory disorders, including metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), and type 2 diabetes. It acts by regulating the gut-liver axis, promoting glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) secretion, and modulating key metabolic and inflammatory targets such as SREBP1c, PPARG, and CXCL2.
