Porcine collagen is a biologic material derived from pork sources, primarily used as a structural scaffold in tissue engineering. In the pharmaceutical context, it is most notably the membrane component of MACI (autologous cultured chondrocytes on porcine collagen membrane), a cell-based product developed by Vericel Corporation. The collagen membrane provides a biocompatible matrix for the attachment and growth of a patient's own cultured chondrocytes. When implanted into the knee, it facilitates the repair of symptomatic, full-thickness cartilage defects by supporting the regeneration of hyaline-like cartilage. It is not intended for use in patients with osteoarthritis.
