Overview

Porcine-derived small intestinal submucosa (SIS) is a biologic extracellular matrix (ECM) scaffold derived from the submucosal layer of the porcine jejunum. It is a decellularized, non-crosslinked material composed primarily of type I collagen, along with elastin, glycosaminoglycans, proteoglycans, and fibronectin. SIS also retains endogenous growth factors such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β). Once implanted, SIS acts as a temporary scaffold that promotes host tissue remodeling by facilitating cell recruitment, proliferation, and site-specific differentiation, eventually being replaced by native tissue. It is widely used in wound care (chronic ulcers), hernia repair, urogenital reconstruction, and cardiovascular applications.
