Porcine fibrin sealant is a biological tissue adhesive and hemostatic agent derived from porcine (pig) blood. It consists of two main components—porcine-derived fibrinogen and thrombin—which are mixed immediately before application to form a hydrogel-like matrix. Upon mixing, thrombin enzymatically converts fibrinogen into insoluble fibrin, forming a stable clot that acts as an adhesive and hemostatic barrier at the site of application. Porcine fibrin sealant provides a biocompatible scaffold for cell adhesion and proliferation, making it useful not only for surgical hemostasis but also as a matrix in tissue engineering applications such as cartilage repair. Its porous microstructure supports wound healing by promoting revascularization, reducing hemorrhage, minimizing inflammation, and accelerating tissue regeneration. Compared to other animal sources (e.g., bovine), porcine plasma offers improved safety with reduced risk of viral transmission due to higher homology with humans[7].
