Overview

Porcine interferon (pIFN) is a cytokine derived from pigs, belonging to the interferon family known for its crucial role in innate immunity. It exhibits antiviral, antitumor, and immunomodulatory properties. Its mechanism involves binding to specific cell surface receptors, primarily the interferon alpha/beta receptor (IFNAR) for type I interferons, which subsequently activates the JAK-STAT signaling pathway. This activation leads to the transcription of numerous interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs), establishing an antiviral state and modulating immune responses. Historically and commonly, porcine interferon has been utilized in veterinary medicine to combat various viral infections in swine, such as African swine fever, porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome, and transmissible gastroenteritis. However, it is also being investigated in human clinical trials, specifically in combination with DOC1021 for the treatment of newly diagnosed adult glioblastoma.
