Overview

**Porcine myeloperoxidase** is a porcine-derived cationic haloperoxidase enzyme being investigated as a locally administered therapeutic. It preferentially associates with negatively charged cancer-cell surfaces and, in the presence of hydrogen peroxide and chloride, catalyzes formation of reactive oxidants including singlet molecular oxygen, producing spatially localized oxidative cytotoxicity. In bladder-cancer cell models, pMPO-based treatment selectively killed T24 and 5637 urothelial carcinoma cells while largely preserving noncancerous urothelial cells; it has been proposed as a potential intravesical treatment for non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer. Exoxemis supplies purified pMPO and is developing myeloperoxidase-based therapeutic formulations.
