Overview

Porcine NPH insulin is an intermediate-acting form of animal-derived (pork) insulin complexed with protamine and zinc to prolong its action. It is used to treat patients with diabetes mellitus, particularly those who are unable to tolerate recombinant human insulins or whose diabetes cannot be adequately controlled by them. The mechanism of action involves replacing endogenous human insulin, thereby facilitating glucose uptake into cells and lowering blood glucose levels. Its onset of action occurs within 1–3 hours, peaks at 6–8 hours, and lasts up to 24 hours. Porcine NPH insulins were historically important before the widespread adoption of recombinant human insulins[1][5][6].
