Viron Molecular Medicine Institute is developing a porosome-biologic-reconstitution therapy for the treatment of cystic fibrosis. The porosome is a supra-molecular lipoprotein structure at the cell plasma membrane that serves as the universal secretory machinery in cells, where membrane-bound secretory vesicles dock and fuse to release their contents. Research suggests that in cystic fibrosis, the porosome complex is structurally and functionally altered, contributing to the disease's characteristic secretory defects. This therapy involves the biologic reconstitution of the porosome to restore normal cellular secretion. The program is currently in the preclinical stage of development.
