Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Porphyra enzymatic hydrolysate (PEPP) is a bioactive preparation derived from the red alga *Porphyra* (specifically prepared using food-grade porphyranase combined with neutral protease). It contains oligo-porphyran and peptides. PEPP acts via the gut-joint axis to modulate the gut microbiota and enhance the production of the short-chain fatty acid propionate. Propionate subsequently suppresses inflammatory cartilage catabolism in chondrocytes by upregulating TNFAIP3 and inhibiting the NF-κB signaling pathway. It is under preclinical development for the treatment of osteoarthritis.
