Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Portal Insulin U-500 is an investigational, highly concentrated formulation of regular human insulin (500 units/mL) developed by Portal Diabetes, Inc. for the treatment of type 1 diabetes mellitus. It is specifically designed for intraperitoneal (IP) administration via an implantable pump as part of an automated artificial pancreas system. By delivering insulin directly into the peritoneal cavity, the drug leverages the rapid pharmacokinetics of the IP route, which more closely mimics physiological portal vein insulin delivery compared to traditional subcutaneous methods. This approach aims to provide faster insulin action and more precise glycemic control with a reduced volume of fluid, facilitating the use of smaller, long-lasting implantable delivery devices.
