Overview

Posidonia oceanica extract (POE) is a polyphenol-rich hydrophilic/ethanolic extract derived from the leaves of the Mediterranean seagrass *Posidonia oceanica*. The phytocomplex primarily consists of catechins (approximately 88%), alongside gallic acid, ferulic acid, and other phenolic compounds. Preclinical research, largely conducted by the University of Florence, suggests therapeutic potential in inflammatory pain, various cancers (fibrosarcoma, breast, and hepatocellular carcinoma), and metabolic disorders like diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Its mechanism of action involves the inhibition of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP-2 and MMP-9), suppression of the NF-κB signaling pathway, and modulation of autophagy, which collectively contribute to its anti-inflammatory, anti-invasive, and metabolic regulatory properties.
