Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Potassium acid phosphate oral thin film is an investigational, age-appropriate formulation developed by the University of Strathclyde for the treatment of hypophosphataemia and osteopenia of prematurity in preterm neonates. Unlike traditional liquid preparations that may contain potentially toxic preservatives or alcohols, these rapidly dissolving oral thin films (OTFs) are designed to dissolve quickly in saliva without the need for water or swallowing effort. The formulation provides essential phosphate and potassium ions to address mineral deficits in infants born before 32 weeks gestational age, aiming to prevent bone disorders such as osteopenia. This formulation is currently being evaluated in clinical trials to demonstrate equivalence to standard oral solutions while offering a safer delivery profile for the neonatal population.
