Potassium alum is an inorganic salt with the chemical formula KAl(SO₄)₂·12H₂O. It is also known as potash alum or potassium aluminum sulfate and is the most important member of the generic class of compounds called alums. Potassium alum acts primarily as an astringent and antiseptic in medical applications. Its mechanism involves inducing coagulation in superficial tissue layers by neutralizing charges on plasma proteins and causing blood to coagulate; this leads to protein precipitation and contraction of tissues, which helps dry secretions and reduce swelling. Potassium alum also has adjuvant properties that enhance immune responses in vaccine formulations. It is used for various indications including as a styptic (to stop minor bleeding), antiperspirant, antifungal agent, oral health care product ingredient, cosmetic astringent (in deodorants and aftershaves), water purification agent, leather tanning agent, dyeing aid, fireproofing textiles additive, baking powder component (E number E522), and more[1][2][3][5].
