Overview

Potassium aspartate is an ionic salt formed from potassium and L-aspartic acid. It functions primarily as a dietary supplement and electrolyte replenisher, crucial for correcting or preventing potassium deficiency, also known as hypokalemia. The compound dissociates in the gastrointestinal tract, releasing potassium ions that are absorbed into the bloodstream to restore normal cellular function, support nerve impulses, and maintain muscle contractions. The L-aspartate component acts as a carrier to facilitate potassium absorption into cells and also contributes to energy production through its role in the Krebs cycle and ammonia detoxification via the urea cycle. It is also investigated for its potential in managing hypertension and hyperammonemia.
