Overview

Potassium bicarbonate is a small molecule mineral supplement and antacid used primarily to treat or prevent hypokalemia (low blood potassium levels)[1][2][3][5]. It acts as an electrolyte replenisher by providing bioavailable potassium ions and as an antacid by neutralizing gastric acid[1]. The compound is also used in some drug formulations as an excipient. Its mechanism of action involves increasing serum potassium concentrations and buffering excess acid in the body. Potassium bicarbonate is considered generally recognized as safe (GRAS) for use in over-the-counter antacids[1]. It is supplied mainly as effervescent oral tablets.
