Potassium bromide is an inorganic salt that was the first effective antiseizure medication, discovered in 1861. It is used in both human and veterinary medicine as an anticonvulsant. In humans, it is approved in some countries, such as Germany, for treating severe forms of generalized tonic-clonic seizures, early-childhood-related tonic-clonic seizures, severe myoclonic seizures, Dravet syndrome, and PCDH19-related epilepsy. In veterinary medicine, it is widely used to control seizures in dogs, often in conjunction with phenobarbital, and has received conditional FDA approval for idiopathic epilepsy in dogs. Its mechanism of action involves the bromide ion, which moves across neuronal chloride channels, leading to intracellular accumulation in neurons and increased gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) inhibition through hyperpolarization of the neuronal membrane, thereby depressing neuronal activity and excitability.
