Overview

Potassium carbonate is an inorganic salt (K2CO3) with diverse applications. In a clinical setting, it has been evaluated as a ceruminolytic for the removal of earwax, addressing conditions like hearing loss, vertigo, and ear infections. Beyond its medical use, potassium carbonate serves as an activating agent in the synthesis of activated biocarbons for CO2 capture, a base-catalyst in various organic synthesis reactions (e.g., silsesquioxane derivatives, benzothiophene derivatives, fullerene derivatives), and a stabilizing element for thermochemical energy storage materials. It is also utilized in CO2 sensing technologies, as a precipitating agent for calcium carbonate microspheres, and has been studied for its effects in poultry and equine diets as a potassium source and buffer. It is also used as a dietary potassium supplement to address low blood potassium levels.
