Potassium citrate is a potassium salt of citric acid used primarily as a urinary alkalinizer. It is indicated for the management of renal tubular acidosis, hypocitraturic calcium oxalate nephrolithiasis (kidney stones), and uric acid lithiasis with or without calcium stones. Potassium citrate works by increasing urinary pH and raising urinary citrate levels, which reduces the formation of kidney stones by complexing with calcium to decrease free calcium ion activity and inhibiting nucleation of stone-forming salts such as calcium oxalate and phosphate. It is rapidly absorbed orally and excreted in urine. Potassium citrate may also be used to treat mild urinary tract infections due to its alkalinizing effect[1][3][5][8].
