Overview

This is a combination of two compounds—potassium citrate and a form of bismuth (commonly as bismuth subcitrate or bismuth potassium citrate). The combination is primarily used for gastrointestinal indications, especially in the management of Helicobacter pylori infection, peptic ulcer disease, gastritis (including chronic superficial and atrophic gastritis), dyspepsia, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. Bismuth salts act locally in the stomach by interfering with bacterial cell membranes and enzymes such as urease; they may also disrupt protein/cell wall synthesis and bacterial adhesion. Potassium citrate acts as an alkalinizing agent that can help neutralize gastric acid or manage urinary conditions but in this context is mainly included for its GI effects. The combination may be compounded into oral solutions or capsules for clinical use[4][5][9]. Bismuth-containing regimens are often part of multi-drug therapies to eradicate H. pylori.
