Potassium magnesium citrate (KMgCit) is a small molecule combination therapy consisting of potassium, magnesium, and citrate ions, primarily used as a urinary alkalinizing agent and electrolyte supplement. It is developed for the prevention and treatment of recurrent calcium oxalate nephrolithiasis (kidney stones), where it works by increasing urinary pH and citrate levels to inhibit the crystallization of stone-forming salts. Additionally, KMgCit is investigated for its potential to manage hypertension—acting as a surrogate for the DASH diet—and to mitigate metabolic side effects, such as hypokalemia and magnesium depletion, induced by thiazide diuretics. The formulation has been studied in various forms, including tablets (notably MPC-5971 by Mission Pharmacal), powders, and liquids. While it is widely available as a dietary supplement, its pharmaceutical development has focused on standardized dosing for clinical efficacy in stone prevention and blood pressure control.
