Potassium dihydrogen phosphate is an inorganic salt ($KH_2PO_4$) that serves as a critical source of exogenous phosphorus and potassium. In clinical research led by the Erasmus Universitair Medisch Centrum Rotterdam (Erasmus MC), it is being investigated as a supplement for hemodialysis fluid in patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). While hemodialysis is necessary for waste removal, it frequently causes excessive phosphate depletion, leading to post-dialysis hypophosphatemia. This depletion is associated with abnormalities in muscle protein turnover, which contributes to muscle wasting and physical frailty. By enriching the dialysate with potassium dihydrogen phosphate, clinicians aim to maintain physiological phosphate concentrations during treatment, thereby normalizing muscle protein synthesis and breakdown and improving overall muscle function in chronic dialysis patients.
