Potassium hydroxybenzovalerate (also known as potassium 2-(1-hydroxypentyl)benzoate or PHPB) is a water-soluble prodrug of 3-n-butylphthalide (dl-NBP), a compound originally isolated from the seeds of Apium graveolens (celery). Developed by the Institute of Materia Medica of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Yunnan Biovalley, potassium hydroxybenzovalerate is being investigated for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. It acts as a modulator of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor, promoting synaptic plasticity and long-term potentiation (LTP) while protecting neurons from oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and apoptosis. The drug has been evaluated in Phase II clinical trials in China for acute ischemic stroke.
