Potassium hydroxypentylbenzoate (PHPB) is a water-soluble potassium salt of the ring-opened form of 3-n-butylphthalide (NBP), a neuroprotective compound originally derived from celery seeds (*Apium graveolens*). Developed by Yunnan Biovalley Innovative Pharmaceutical, PHPB was designed to improve the solubility and pharmacokinetic profile of NBP, facilitating its use as an intravenous injection for acute ischemic stroke. The drug exerts neuroprotective effects through multiple pathways, including the improvement of cerebral microcirculation, stabilization of mitochondrial function, reduction of oxidative stress via the Nrf2 pathway, and inhibition of neuronal apoptosis by suppressing caspase-3 activity. It is currently in late-stage clinical development in China for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke and cerebral infarction.
