Potassium iodate is an inorganic compound used primarily as a thyroid blocking agent in the event of a nuclear emergency. Its main mechanism of action is to saturate the thyroid gland with stable (non-radioactive) iodine, thereby preventing the uptake of radioactive iodine that may be released into the environment during nuclear accidents.
