Potassium iodate is an inorganic compound used primarily as a thyroid blocking agent in the event of a nuclear emergency. Its main mechanism of action is to saturate the thyroid gland with stable (non-radioactive) iodine, thereby preventing the uptake of radioactive iodine that may be released into the environment during nuclear accidents. This reduces the risk of radiation-induced damage to the thyroid gland, particularly in vulnerable populations such as children and infants. Potassium iodate is typically administered orally in tablet form for this indication[1]. It is not commonly used for other medical purposes and should only be taken when directed by public health authorities.
