Overview
Potassium permanganate is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula KMnO4. It appears as a purplish-black crystalline salt that dissolves in water to give an intensely pink to purple solution[8]. Medically, it is used topically as an oxidizing agent for its disinfectant, deodorizing, and astringent properties[2][5]. Its primary indications include treatment of various skin conditions such as fungal infections (e.g., athlete's foot), impetigo, pemphigus, superficial wounds, dermatitis (eczema), and tropical ulcers[1][5]. The mechanism of action involves oxidation of organic material and microorganisms at the site of application. Potassium permanganate is not recommended for oral use due to toxicity risks. It is included on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines[8].
