Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Potassium phosphate + sodium phosphate (commonly referred to as neutral phosphate) is an oral phosphorus supplement and urinary modifier. It is a fixed-dose combination of monobasic and dibasic sodium and potassium phosphate salts formulated to maintain a neutral pH of approximately 7.0. The drug is primarily indicated for the treatment and prevention of hypophosphatemia and to prevent the recurrence of calcium-containing kidney stones (such as calcium oxalate and calcium phosphate stones). By increasing serum phosphate levels, it downregulates the synthesis of active vitamin D (1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D), which subsequently decreases intestinal calcium absorption and urinary calcium excretion. Additionally, it increases the urinary excretion of pyrophosphate, a potent natural inhibitor of calcium stone crystallization. The University of Chicago has conducted clinical trials evaluating low-dose neutral phosphate supplementation specifically for patients with recurrent calcium oxalate kidney stones and hypophosphatemia.
