Potassium poly-γ-glutamate (PGA-K) is the potassium salt form of poly-γ-glutamic acid, a naturally occurring, biodegradable, water-soluble biopolymer composed of D- and/or L-glutamic acid units linked by γ-amide bonds. PGA-K is produced primarily by fermentation of Bacillus species. In animal studies, particularly in models of diet-induced obesity, PGA-K demonstrated significant reduction in body weight gain, adipose tissue accumulation, liver steatosis, and improved lipid profiles. It also reduced markers of inflammation (TNF-α, IL-6) and insulin resistance (leptin, insulin), suggesting potential as an anti-obesity and metabolic disorder therapeutic. Mechanistically, PGA-K is thought to act through modulation of inflammatory signaling and improvement of insulin sensitivity rather than by a single specific protein target.
