Potassium thiocyanate (KSCN) is an inorganic salt that historically served as a weak antihypertensive agent, though its clinical use has been largely discontinued due to toxicity concerns, including thiocyanate and cyanide poisoning. In modern biomedical research, it is investigated as a supplement agent to enhance the efficacy of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) by generating additional reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive species like the thiocyanate radical. It is also widely used as a chemical reagent in the synthesis of heterocyclic compounds (such as thiadiazoles and thioureas), as a component in perovskite solar cell fabrication, and as a pseudohalide in analytical chemistry.
