Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Poulvac E. coli is a modified-live bacterial vaccine developed and marketed by Zoetis for the prevention of colibacillosis in poultry. The vaccine consists of a live, attenuated strain of Escherichia coli serotype O78 that has been modified through the deletion of the aroA gene. This genetic modification prevents the bacteria from synthesizing essential aromatic compounds, thereby attenuating its virulence while maintaining its ability to induce a robust immune response. It is indicated for use in chickens and turkeys to reduce mortality and clinical lesions such as pericarditis, perihepatitis, and airsacculitis caused by avian pathogenic E. coli (APEC). The vaccine is typically administered via coarse spray or drinking water and has demonstrated cross-protective efficacy against other E. coli serotypes, including O1, O2, and O18.
