Overview

Povexime is a branded generic antibiotic containing cefpodoxime proxetil, a third-generation cephalosporin, developed and marketed by Makshi Healthcare. It is an orally administered prodrug that is absorbed and hydrolyzed in the body to its active metabolite, cefpodoxime. Cefpodoxime exhibits broad-spectrum bactericidal activity against various Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The drug's mechanism of action involves the inhibition of bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which are essential for the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis. This interference leads to the weakening of the bacterial cell wall and subsequent cell lysis. Povexime is typically indicated for the treatment of mild-to-moderate infections caused by susceptible microorganisms, including acute community-acquired pneumonia, acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, and uncomplicated urinary tract infections.
