Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Povidone-iodine is a broad-spectrum topical iodophor antiseptic consisting of iodine complexed with povidone. In aqueous preparations, it releases free iodine that rapidly oxidizes and iodinates microbial proteins, membrane lipids, and nucleic acids, producing nonselective activity against bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and viruses. It is supplied in multiple nonproprietary and branded formulations for skin antisepsis, surgical-site preparation, wound first aid, and selected mucosal or ophthalmic antisepsis applications. US OTC labeling for 10% solutions identifies povidone-iodine as a topical antiseptic for preoperative skin preparation and prevention of infection in minor cuts, scrapes, and burns.
