Overview

**Povidone-iodine** is a topical broad-spectrum antiseptic consisting of iodine complexed with polyvinylpyrrolidone. In the Nantes University Hospital MRSAD-PVP-I study, it was evaluated as a complete transient decolonization kit for adults colonized with methicillin-resistant *Staphylococcus aureus*, comprising a nasal gel, antiseptic body soap, and oral mouthwash. Free iodine released from the complex acts nonselectively on microbial cellular constituents, causing rapid oxidative damage to proteins, nucleic acids, membrane components, and other essential macromolecules. The Phase 2 study, NCT05696132, evaluated decolonization efficacy and acceptability as an alternative to mupirocin plus chlorhexidine and was terminated.
