povidone-iodine + tetracycline

Povidone-iodine + tetracycline is a combination of two antimicrobial agents used for prevention and treatment of infections. Povidone-iodine is a water-soluble complex formed by combining iodine with polyvinyl pyrrolidone that acts as a broad-spectrum antiseptic for topical application. It works by gradually releasing free iodine that penetrates microbial cell membranes and interacts with proteins, nucleotides, and fatty acids, resulting in cell death. Tetracycline is an antibiotic that prevents bacterial growth by inhibiting protein synthesis. The combination has been studied for prevention of ophthalmia neonatorum (neonatal eye infection).
